Advantages of Barcode Label

October 28, 2009

Barcode labels are the helping tags for both human and machine to identify a product. Price and product info can be simply stored in the lines of the barcode and so it can make selling products a lot easier and less time consuming. Barcode labels are also valuable in the tracking of items. Barcodes are used extensively worldwide.

Speed, Accuracy, Consistency, Economy, these are just a few of the reasons manufacturers use bar coding to identify and track inventory, manufacturing work-in-process, and distribution.

Types of barcode:

Barcode labels come in several types and resemble the average tags. These labels are differentiated by the type of base material, called stock, that they are printed on. Labels are currently available in all types of materials and come with a variety of adhesive backings. They can also be ordered in several customized shapes and sizes. Apart from the basic types of barcodes labels, labels can also be categorized into three main forms: aluminum barcode labels, polyester barcode labels, and ceramic barcode labels.

Designing and applying bar code labels:

When designing and applying bar code labels this list of questions will help you to get idea about your label:

  • How long the label will stay on?
  • What will the label be exposed to?
  • Should the substrate be paper or synthetic?
  • Should the adhesive be permanent or temporary?
  • Will it be exposed to a cold environment?
  • How much data will be encoded?
  • Must the label be removable without residue?

Steps to follow:

If you make decision about bar-coding your product then firstly you have to apply for registration to your national article numbering body. It will give you a company code number and a range of product code numbers. This number helps your product to be recognized when they will be scanned.

After getting the barcode number you will need to transfer this information on to your products. With some products it will be possible to print it directly on to the item, but barcode labels are an easy alternative if this isn't possible. The label can then be added securely to the product, and easily removed when necessary.

Barcode label printing:

Computers, scanners and printers are all used in conjunction to design, test and print labels. Sequential numbers or alphabets are provided on the labels so that they can be used to manage inventory.

You can print your labels with the help of a manufacturer or by yourself.

Label manufacturer: They can help you to design and print you required labels. Manufacturers use specialized software to design the labels and put all the information about the product. You can rely upon bar code manufacturers to buy labels as it not only saves your money, but also time and manpower.

Make your label by your self: If you want you can print your own labels. You can do the job by using barcode label software and printers.

Software: Bar code label software is used to print symbols on bar codes. This software can render a pattern of black stripes and dots, each unique from the other, which is used to print bar code stickers. The software prints intricate patterns for each product. The pattern may be several black lines of different thicknesses or it may be a crisscross arrangement of thick and thin black dots. It can be uploaded on a computer like any other software program and possesses a myriad of features. It gives the user the option to decide a label's appearance, including the type and size of text, bar codes and graphics. By using these types of software you can save a lot of time, money and manpower.

Printer: The best way to print bar codes is to use laser, ink jet or dot matrix printers. Bar code printers are of two major types- bar code direct thermal printer and bar code thermal transfer printer. Direct thermal printers are characteristically more affordable than thermal transfer printers, as they do not require the mechanisms and electronics that are necessary to control and run an ink ribbon. Bar code label printers require regular cleaning of the ribbon and the print head. Specks of dust may cause distortion of the bar code.

There is some software available which can help you to design your labels.

Barcode Label Adhesives

Barcode label adhesive is the substance or material applied to the back of a barcode label to attach it to the surface of a particular item. A barcode label adhesive should be of industrial grade and must have an apply temperature ranging from 40 °F to 250 °F. Shear, tack, and peel are among the properties that are critical for barcode label adhesives. Barcode label adhesives are generally classified into two groups: permanent and removable barcode label adhesives. Most of the barcode applications employ permanent barcode label adhesives.

So, use barcode labels on your products to save money as well as create product identification.

Most people are not aware about the fact that gardening could actually harm one's environment. Huge amount of carbon-dioxide could be released while tilling the soil. It contributes to the global warming. As you cultivate and compact the soil, it would destroy good fungi. Some fertilizers like nitrogen and other manure usually leach out soil and pollute water meant for drinking.

Global warming

It is known that the earth's soil lets out carbon-dioxide in atmosphere ten times more than any human activity. It comes from pill bugs, the microbes, fungi and other worms as it breathes, digests food and then dies. Even though earlier the plants have been always capable of absorbing carbon the dioxide caused by small scale tillage, it is not the case these days. The increase in the earth's average temperature is due to the carbon dioxide which the oil gives out when tilled. The goodness here is that the tilling could be minimized when sheet composting or mulching.

Good Fungi

Within untilled soil, we can find a beneficial fungi namely, vesicular-arbuscular-mycorrhizae or the VAM in short. VAM essentially forms some symbiotic relationship along with plants. The filaments increase the root hairs and supply the nutrients for the plant. It gives out copper, potassium, zinc, and phosphorus. All plants provide carbohydrates to the fungi for the return. One can always grow a garden without even tilling soil by mulching heavily till the soil gets soft and friable.

The Surplus Nitrogen

Most gardeners waste the nitrogen and related manures; the farmers do it otherwise. Farmers only want around a quarter to a third of the nitrogen to mix it with an inch of horse, compost, or cow manure. Ms. Kate Burroughs from Sebastopol California makes use of the same regulation for her home-grown sweet corns and lettuce. When it gets to pear trees and broccoli, farmers require only a small amount. It is seen that gardeners apply bigger amount of manure and compost than farmers do. Obviously, they not only waste the fertilizer but also the money.

Best gardening tips that is often given to people concerned is doing everything within moderation. It should be ensured that very little or excess of anything is never healthy. This is one valuable advice that could be implemented in gardening.

We'll all have seen movies with characters riding on horseback, whether it's a western or a period drama it seems that riding a horse is often the most dramatic method of transport.  The trouble is that they can often present a false image of what clothing is best for horse riding and if emulated in real life can have bad consequences from discomfort to serious injuries.

Your riding style may dictate different fashions but essentially the clothing you'll be wearing will be similar.

Riding Jodhpurs, Breeches or Jeans

Typically western style riding is associated with wearing jeans, it's important not to wear loose jeans as these can cause nasty chaffing.  Western riding is typically associated with chaps too, made of leather these do well to protect against the elements but also any brush or branches you may encounter.  English riding is often associated with jodhpurs which are fitted trousers with a cuff near the ankle.  This allows the wearer to wear shorter boots as opposed to knee high riding boots.

Shirts, Jackets and coats

For the upper body it's normal to wear a long sleeve shirt to protect the rider from the sun, especially in hotter climates.  For cold weather conditions a jacket or coat may be more suitable to wear over any usual garments.  With coats and jackets it's important to keep them closed/buttoned up and that you are able to move freely so you are able to keep control.  It's advised to refrain from short sleeved shirts or t-shirts as these don't provide protection to the arms from objects or brush.

Footwear and horse riding boots

Footwear is important and careful consideration needs to be taken with regards to the sole of the shoe or boot.  Flat shoes are not advised as in the event of some sort of accident then your foot could slip through the stirrup and get your leg caught.  The solution is to go for a proper horse riding boot or cowboy boot with a defined heel of around 1 inch; this would keep your feet in the correct position preventing your foot becoming caught.

Headwear for protection and safety

Typically western styles depicted in TV and film show horse riders wearing cowboy hats and whilst this protects the rider's head and neck form the sun it becomes pretty ineffective in the event of an accident or a fall.  New riders and experienced riders alike will normally wear a riding helmet; make sure that they are fully certified to current standards when buying.

There are many retailers who sell horse riding supplies who will be able to inform you of the correct gear to buy and what safety equipment you should buy for the safety of you, the rider and your horse.

Join me as we journey back in time to our high school English Lit class. We are reading from William Shakespeare’s Richard the Third. It seems as though good King Richard was in a tough spot. Consequently, his perception of value had just taken a right turn. Minutes before he had castles, Knights, Ladies in Waiting and a pile of gold the size of Buckingham Palace, now he placed more value on a fast horse and a ticket out of town.

We’re in a Recession – hopefully it’s not a secret. Your customers, just like King Richard, find themselves at the business end of a double-edged sword. Their business is tracking downward and their banker is squeezing. Wouldn’t it make sense to consider that their perception of value might have changed too? Sales Managers must help their teams redefine their approach to customer value - quickly.

Commodity salespeople sell, the customer service folks enter orders and warehouse people ship product. But, knowledge-based distributors add that “fairy dust” we call value. This is a special value. It goes above and beyond the intrinsic worth of products and technology listed in catalogs. We all know – if the products “sold themselves”, the distribution channel would have gone caput sometime around 1998.

Now consider this: The changing economic landscape has changed the way our customers perceive value. We can either flounder in our efforts to swim against the current of change, or we can harness the power. Let’s drill into this.

During times of economic expansion customers place highest value on the ideas you present which drives growth. For example, if your idea allows them to increase the outflow of products by 4-5% - you have contributed great value. But as the fluctuation trends downward, things change. The highest value shifts from growth to cost reduction and avoidance. Further, customers’ adversity to risk takes a giant leap forward. Walk a mile in their shoes, taking a big risk in tough times can be career and/or company threatening.

If you will please note, I said they place the highest value. It doesn’t mean the other things loose their value, but the value changes. Let me illustrate this with a short story from America’s past. Families in covered wagons trekked across the great wilderness with all their worldly possessions loaded aboard. When the mountains turned to desert they were faced with a choice – grandma’s piano or a couple extra barrels of water. And while that fine musical instrument still had value – for the next 300 miles water shifted to a higher value. Today’s economic situation has put some companies into a similar mode with cash flow. They want to hold on to more of it for longer periods. Align your value statement with this thought and the force of nature work with you.

Now here’s the rub. All too many distributor organizations have taken a circle the wagon approach (pardon the continuation of my Conestoga analogy). They push their sales team to do more of the same. First, they hesitated to teach their team how to measure and record real value. Now, they continue forward pushing the same products with increasingly poor results. And, they chalk it up to the economy.

Let me implore you. No, let me beg you. Take time at your sales meetings to discuss value – customer value. Not just value as some obscure term. Discuss value in the most meaningful of terms - that 5,000 year old metric of value – Money. The companies who use these times to build, measure and report back the value they provide will be the winners when things get back to normal.

Before I sign off,

If you assume your customer contacts already understand your value, you are terribly mistaken. Report after report (from the folks who track our customers) indicate, our customer’s management team has the same problem we do: their people don’t understand financial drivers. Your company’s sales team needs to lead the way and help customers connect the dots.
