Just wonderingg...
So, I'm planning on buying a 4 y/o Arabian mare whose REAL mellow and already started. She's used to being ridden bareback or with an Australian saddle...
But she needs more training and once I get her I'm not going to use an australian saddle...
I'm planning on having her mainly an English horse, but i'm going to finish off her training in a western saddle.
Is there anything I can do to get her comfortable to these new saddles? Thankyou!(:
The main thing will be to buy Arab saddles. Arabians have a barrel shape that ties into the wither differently than any other breed. An arab tree is built to accommodate that shape, and has a flatter tree.
Arab western saddles also are built with a shorter length to the skirts, to accommodate the shorter back of an arabian.
I ride my arab in both western and english saddles, and in the Cashel soft saddle. He is fine with all of them, since they all fit him properly.
Some Arabs that are narrower in the shoulder can go in a semi qh tree western saddle, but the skirts should be shorter than average, and a rounded skirt is best. Most are best fitted with an arabian tree, though.

I have a black and white SSH gelding and i would love to train him and use him for western pleasure but do the judges favor breeds such as QH's and paints rather than gaited horses? also, does anyone think that gaited horses look good doing wp?
serious answers only please!
I wouldn't do it....they pick what they like as long as it is in the guidelines....I doubt it would be a gated horse

I am looking to buy a comforable used western style saddle, but need a few guidelines to help me on what to look for and what to avoid. Will be used for mostly trail riding, so comfort is key for both me and my quarter horse. My budget is about $800 - $1000. Thanks in advance for any info!
That'll get you a real nice saddle, especially if used. Check out your local horse auctions and watch what they're selling for. Check your local papers. If you're near a large city there are usually several in the ads. Go online to see what new ones sell for. You can see the condition of the leather and metal ok, but check underneath. That's what your horse will feel. Make sure it's not worn too much. You can however have that replaced if needed.
